President Trump took office on January 20, 2017. Now it will be up to him and his administration to leave a legacy of success. President Trump can reach success by fulfilling his campaign promises. While there are many opportunities for the administration, there will also be many challenges. One opportunity for the Trump administration is a healthcare overhaul. On the opposite end, one strong challenge for the administration involves immigration policies. It will be important for President Trump to accomplish as much as he possibly can in order to be regarded as a successful 45th President of the United States.

Healthcare was a big part of President Obama’s legacy, and now President Trump has the opportunity to make it a part of his legacy as well. 53% of all Americans disapprove of the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, 43% of Americans who overall approve of the ACA would prefer major changes to the law. Many Republican members of Congress have also voiced strong opposition to Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Members of Congress began work to repeal the Affordable Care Act when they returned to Washington on January 3. With a Republican majority in Congress, along with the support of many Americans, this can be an opportunity for President Trump to pass alternate healthcare legislation. If Trump is able to do this, he will be turning one of his largest opportunities into future presidential success.

One of Trump’s largest challenges will be regarding his immigration policies. He has already faced strong opposition to this type of legislation. One of President Trump’s first executive orders was an immigration ban on people coming from seven predominantly Muslim countries. This ban was followed by protests, injunctions and legal cases. An appellate court most recently struck down the ban, but Trump is still set on enacting this type of legislation. Furthermore, one of Trump’s major campaign promises involved the wall he to be built on the United States and Mexican border. However, Mexico refuses to pay for the wall. Trump now has considered enacting a 20% import tax on all Mexican goods, or getting the money to pay for the wall from Congress. While Republicans do have the majority in Congress, many members have spoken out against the wall. Therefore, it may be difficult for Trump to get Congress to fund the wall. It will be a definite challenge for President Trump to fulfill his campaign immigration promises, which could hurt his presidential legacy in the end.

Leaving a legacy of success is not an easy task. The first 100 days of a new presidency are when a president is able to set the tone for his term and influence the policy agenda of Congress. While Trump may have to compromise on some of his immigration policies, success is still possible. Healthcare can be a major place for Trump to create new legislation that Americans are happier with. The main thing for President Trump is to try and fulfill as many of his campaign promises as possible. If he is able to do that, then he can leave a legacy of success as the 45th President of the United States.
